Considering it is a first year design of an all-new model from a small manufacturer, I’m surprised this is our first. We bought it in November 2012 as a 2013. For reference, the early-2013 Ford Escape (which we cross shopped) is up to twelve recalls now - only a few of which involve catching on fire.
Apparently, the little 2.0 hamster spinning on its wheel gets mad if you floor it when it's cold outside.

Wow, that’s FCA bad. I thought Ford had it together!

That Escape really does sound bad. Would I be right in saying that the Escape is a much less complicated car as well?

Twelve recalls? Holy crap Ford what the hell.
Actually, no that doesn’t surprise me. Given its 2016 and they still can’t screw an interior together right what’s stopping them from messing up the rest of the car.

heh, we bought our 2012 MY jetta in September of 2011. It was in the first batch of MK6 Jettas that the dealer got, and it was the first stick MK6 jetta they sold.

I doubt it. Some of the recalls were EcoBoost-specific and I’d have to imagine the turbo Ford is more complicated than the NA Mazda.

Ah fair enough, true. I think the SkyActivs are probably a bit high-tech. But you can’t deny EcoBoost

Yeah these are great cars, we really don't see much go wrong with them! Mazda always amazes me with how good they can be for such a small company, it really makes me want to see them prosper and see what they can do then.

Compared to some of the other recalls, I’d call that one pretty minor.

Basically, somebody made a programming oopsie.

And yet they are not pulling a GM and saying “Us? No ... we are NOT guilty.” Get it fixed, and be pleased that they leveled with you.

I blame the plastic fasteners in the interiors, not even a weak-armed midget would be able to not snap and wreck that. Underbody bolts can take a proper beating tho, no worry there!

Yay, the 2.5L seems unaffected.
Also, I didn’t know the CX-5 was made outside of Japan. I’m not even sure I knew Mazda had an active plant in Mexico (though I think the 2 is/was made there, since the Fiesta is too...?).

I’ve always been pleased with Mazda’s response to recalls. My wife’s old 2006 Malibu had power steering that went out all the time and GM constantly denied anything was wrong and said they weren’t issuing a recall. They’ve since changed their minds. Anyway, I had a power steering recall on my former car, a 2008 Mazda3, and it went off without a hitch. Dropped the car off, had the recall done, and took it back home. Shocking when a company actually treats their customers well.
And, we have never noticed this problem with our CX-5. This was the first I heard of it.

The Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta don’t have anything in common anymore since Ford dumped almost all their shares in Mazda. The new Mazda2 is a new design and Mazda specific, but we only get it here in the States as the Scion iA. But yes, Mazda does have a plant in Mexico to make the 3 and the 2. I think eventually they will make other models there, too.
But, the 3 is their volume seller so they wanted to lower its production costs first.

I just checked and it's actually up to 17 now.

When we got ours it was in the midst of the “Stop Sale” on CX-5s due to torque converter failures. We had only TWO Sports on the lot at the time, the blue one we got, and a red one that fell under the recall.
*Crossed fingers* haven’t had a single recall or problem with it except the Bluetooth module that needed replacement on EVERY Mazda.
But now that its been cold the driver’s seat squeaks when you wiggle in it, and the driver’s door lock actuator squeaks when you lock the door the first time after its been sitting.
Oh well. Wife doesn’t seem annoyed by them, so it won’t be going to the dealer anytime soon.

Our lock actuator squeaks too.
Also, what is this about a Bluetooth module?
![]() 01/28/2016 at 11:23 |

Most Mazdas with Bluetooth needed a module replacement after re-flashing/updating it didn’t work. Slow or no pairing was the issue. Its better now that we had it replaced (there’ a TSB for it), but my $80 eBay made in China adapter for my 3 is still lightyears faster.

Ours screwed up once but I unpaired and repaired my phone and it was okay since. The only thing it consistently does is say “Call history download failed.” But pairing never seems to be an issue, except it does sometimes get confused about which phone to pair to if both my wife and I have our Bluetooth on.

Ours would pair fine, but it would take FOREVER or a couple tries to get the car and phone to sync up when getting back into the car.

My mom’s 2015 cx5 also has a squeaking actuator. Do you think it’s worth taking in for warranty work?

Depends. Until it fully fails (if and/or when) its up to her if she can live with it, or has the time to visit the dealer.
